What cleanser should you use as per your skin type?
Find Your Perfect Cleanser: A Tailored Approach to Radiant Skin
Are you tired of trying a million different cleansers only to find that none of them seem to be working for your skin?
Are you frustrated with the never-ending quest to find the perfect cleanser that’ll actually clean your skin?
Well, fear not! I am here to help you put an end to this trial and error once and for all.
In this small guide, I’ll tell you how to choose the perfect cleanser as per your unique skin type that won’t just cleanse but also help you achieve the radiant skin of your dreams.
But first, why do you even care about finding a perfect cleanser? You just have to wash it off at the end. So, what’s even the point of finding a perfect cleanser?
Good question!
Why should you care about finding a Perfect Cleanser?
Let’s first understand how your cleanser is just as important as the rest of your skincare routine.
Your cleanser is the first step in your skincare routine, as it removes dirt and impurities, allowing you to start with a nice, clean canvas for the rest of your skincare routine
But using a cleanser that doesn’t work for your skin type can make things worse, as it won’t clean your skin as effectively as it should, which in turn can lead to breakouts, clogged pores, and, in the worst cases, even an infestation of acne on your whole face.
Besides that, the wrong cleanser can also irritate and inflame your skin or even damage your skin’s protective barrier.
So, that’s why you should use a cleanser that’ll actually cleanse your skin without stripping its natural oils.
Now let’s discover the right cleanser for your skin type.
Understanding Your Skin Type
I won’t dive into your skin type here again, as I’ve already written about it, but I’ll explain it here in a nutshell just to help you choose the right cleanser.
If you want to understand your skin type in depth, you can read here. In this in-depth guide, I’ve also shared what skincare ingredients you must use as per your skin type for healthy skin.
Knowing your skin type can also help you make a good skincare routine that your skin can actually benefit from, so it’s worth reading.
Normal Skin: You guys are the Goldilocks of all skin types — not too oily, not too dry, just perfect skin! (PS: I am a bit jealous of people with this skin type😂🥲)
Oily Skin: Your skin must get shiny throughout the day and feel quite greasy. You may also be prone to acne, breakouts, and blackheads.
Dry Skin: If your skin feels tight, dry, rough, flaky (has annoying dry white patches), or lacks moisture, then you have arid dry skin like I do (and now we can be friends😂).
Combination Skin: This skin type has the best (or worst) of both oily and dry skin types. Typically, the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) is oily, and the rest is dry.
Sensitive Skin: Sensitive skin is prone to irritation and redness and also reacts to certain ingredients or new skincare products.
Acne-Prone Skin: Your skin is prone to frequent breakouts and requires special attention to prevent and treat acne.
I hope you all have a better understanding of your unique skin type. Now jump straight to your skin type and find the perfect cleanser for you!
Choosing the Right Cleanser for You
For Normal Skin: Gel or Cream Cleansers
Lucky you, you have balanced and hassle-free skin, so you don’t need any special care or attention.
So, opt for either a gel or a cream cleanser. Feel free to experiment with different textures and formulas to find the one that works the best for you.
You don’t need to have any active skincare ingredients in your cleanser. The least you can look for is a hydrating cleanser that has glycerin or hyaluronic acid.
For Oily Skin: Gel Cleansers
You need to get rid of that excess oil, sebum, sweat, and accumulated gunk throughout the day from your skin, so opt for a gel cleanser. (Tip: Don’t use creamy cleansers as they can contribute to excess oil.)
Gel cleansers can effectively remove all the excess oil and other impurities without stripping away your skin’s natural oils.
You can look for ingredients like salicylic acid or tea tree oil to help get rid of and control oil. Some oily skin folks can be prone to breakouts, and these ingredients (esp. Salicylic acid) can help keep breakouts and acne at bay.
For Dry Skin: Cream Cleansers
Dry skin lacks moisture and hydration, so even while cleansing, you’d take care of its hydration and moisturize it.
So, look for creamy, rich, and hydrating cleansers. Ideally, go for a cleanser that doesn’t foam. From my personal experience, they work the best; they cleanse your skin well while moisturizing it.
I’ve personally used the Cetaphil cleanser and Skinkraft’s cleanser, and I am in love with both of them. I usually don’t give product recommendations, but they’re my sweethearts.
If you’re looking for a similar cleanser, then you must try them out.
These creamy cleansers leave your skin feeling soft and supple.
You can also look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, oats, or ceramides to cleanse your skin while replenishing its moisture and nourishing your dry skin.
For Combination Skin: Foaming Cleansers
Your skin is both dry and oily, so a little bit tricky to handle, but don’t worry, I got your back😉!
You should look for foaming cleansers as they won’t excessively dry your skin and will also help control oil production in your T-zone.
Opt for gentle formulas that’ll cleanse your skin thoroughly without disrupting your skin's natural balance.
Or if you’re looking for a more tailored and effective approach, you can also consider using two different cleansers for your skin.
You can use a creamy and more hydrating cleanser for your drier areas (don’t use this cleanser on your T-zone). This will hydrate drier areas without overstriping.
In my personal experience, foaming cleansers were a little drying for my dry skin, so I’d recommend you use two different cleansers instead.
But you can always try and experiment to know which one would work best for you.
And for your oily T-zone, go for a gel cleanser or cleanser with salicylic acid; this will help with oil and your blackheads on the nose.
Your everyday foaming cleanser is also good for that; it has ingredients to control oil.
For Sensitive Skin: Fragrance-Free Cleansers
Sensitive skin needs extra attention and gentle care, as it can get irritated quite easily.
So, make it clear in your mind to steer clear of harsh ingredients and fragrances, as they’re the main culprits of irritation and redness.
So, opt for gentle and hydrating cleansers that are fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, and designed specifically for your sensitive skin.
You can also look for ingredients like aloe vera (if you aren’t allergic to it), chamomile or glycerin to calm and comfort your delicate skin with every cleanse.
For Acne-Prone Skin: Salicylic Acid or Benzoyl Peroxide Cleansers
Acne-prone skin can be a bit difficult to take care of.
So, look for cleansers targeted to care for your breakouts and keep pesky pimples at bay without overly drying your skin.
Look for cleansers with acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.
These powerhouse ingredients will help unclog your pores and banish any acne-causing bacteria.
Additional Tips for Effective Cleansing
Double Cleansing
If you wear makeup or even sunscreen, then cleansing your skin once isn’t enough.
You need to double cleanse to get rid of all that makeup and sunscreen.
If you have dry skin, you can consider using micellar water or oil-based cleansers to double-cleanse.
You can consider skipping your morning cleanse if double cleansing feels too much for your skin. But it’s a non-negotiable step if you wear makeup or sunscreen.
If you have oily, acne-prone, and combination skin, use gel cleanser or micellar water to remove makeup, followed by your everyday cleanser to double cleanse.
You can also use a water-based cleanser to cleanse your skin afterward.
Consistency is Key
No matter what your skin type is, consistency is key when it comes to having healthy and radiant skin.
So, make sure you stay consistent with your cleansing routine and don’t go to bed without removing makeup or sunscreen.
I am telling you, with experience, to listen to me and remove your makeup and sunscreen thoroughly, or just wait for some cute acne and breakouts to pop up.
And make sure to cleanse your face twice daily, morning and night, unless you have dry skin, to maintain clear and healthy skin.
Patch Test
If you truly love your skin, then you’ll never skip patch testing any new skincare products before putting them on your face.
This will help you avoid a lot of headaches and many adverse reactions to new skincare products. Read my guide to patch-testing here.

Using the cleanser made exclusively for your unique skin type can be a game-changer in your skincare routine.
